ideal diamond cut

The True Definition of an Ideal Cut Diamond

An ideal cut diamond is a round brilliant cut diamond that's cut to such precise proportions that the light entering through all sides of the diamond is sent back out of the diamond through the table with maximum reflection and refraction.

The Importance of a Diamond's Cut

There are, as you probably already know, many popular diamond cuts. While some cuts (round and radiant) are specifically intended to enhance brilliance, a properly cut diamond of any shape should appear sparkly - not dull - in bright light.

Depth

Depth refers to how tall a diamond is from top (called the 'table') to bottom (called the 'culet').

Symmetry

With perfect symmetry, a diamond looks 'whole.' Misalignment or disproportional cuts will wreak havoc on how light travels through the diamond. Just as with poor depth, poor symmetry will cause a diamond to appear dull.

Polish

Polish refers to the smoothness of the surface of every facet that is cut into a raw diamond. Excellent polish greatly enhances a diamond's brilliance because it creates less diffusion as light enters and exits the diamond.

What is a Good Diamond Cut?

Rough diamonds can be cut by experts to virtually any shape and size. Cut determines amount of reflected light that exits through the top of a diamond.

Is cut important?

A poorly cut diamond will appear relatively dull, even if clarity and color are perfect.

How is cut graded?

To determine the diamond's cut grade:

-The symmetry of the diamond is evaluated The final cut grade of the diamond is determined by its weakest component.

Remember: Only about 3% of polished diamonds are ideal cuts.
